Malta - the friendliest island in the Med

Religious door plaques in Malta

Malta is predominantly a Roman Catholic country. The Maltese use religious imagery in their daily lives as an expression of their faith.

A common example is the religious plaque or house sign displayed beside a front door of the Virgin Mary, Joseph with a baby Jesus or one of the saints. Sometimes, instead of a plaque there is an alcove containing plaster figures.

This practice is widespread. Some more elaborate examples can be seen in the silent city of Mdina where the buildings are mainly associated with the church.

There is a large number of churches in Malta, many are large, most beautifully designed. The Mosta Dome in the centre of the island is the 3rd largest in the world.

If you visit the capital city Valletta you may encounter life-size figures of various saints on street corners.
